What is Amazonite

What is Amazonite?

A variety of potassium feldspar is the mineral class of Microcline. Comes in shades of purple, grey, green, and blue. Most often, it is a greenish-blue color. The stone originally found in what is now known as Brazil has been around for thousands of years, since at least the 10th century BC.  It is said that Brazilian women warriors, otherwise known as the Amazonians, adorned their shields with Amazonite to provide extra protection in battle in the forest and the surrounding areas. They believed that using the stone on their shields would make it back to their families after battles.

Amazonite is very colorful and often occurs in beautiful crystal clusters. That makes it extremely popular with mineral specimen collectors. It is a stone of hope and harmony.

However, Amazonite is used for jewelry making only by designers whose specialties are rare or unusual gems. It’s hard for other jewelry makers to use the gem because it can be difficult to find an adequate supply of Amazonite.

Meaning and General Information

The meaning is to soothe anxiety and bring clarity. Amazonite is named after the Amazon River. It ranges from bright verdigris green to paler shades of turquoise, sometimes with white, yellow, or grey portions, and can be translucent to opaque. It has a vitreous luster and, when polished, resembles finely cracked or spider-webbed marble and displays a Schiller effect of pearly iridescence throughout the stone.

Called the Stone of Courage and the Stone of Truth, Amazonite empowers one to search the self and discover your truths and integrity. It encourages us to move beyond the fear of judgment or confrontation with others to align with those beliefs and values. It provides the freedom to express your thoughts and feelings. Teaches us to set strong and clear boundaries, internally as self-discipline and externally as what we’re willing to take and experience.

Some Brazilian legends about the Amazonian warriors feature green stones for bonding between males and females. Amazonite has also been found in Egypt and Mesopotamia due to archeological excavations.

The stone is often cut into a cabochon for jewelry purposes. Amazonite is best used in earrings, pendants, and pins. These are items of jewelry that encounter less abrasion and impact compared to a ring or a bracelet. Anyone working with Amazonite for jewelry will most likely put a protective layer of bezels around it. If you cleanse your Amazonite in water, be mindful not to drink the water as the stone is made of potassium feldspar, which is not consumable.

Benefits of Amazonite

Amazonite may help to soothe anxious thinking and helps with healing past trauma. If your mind sometimes acts like shattered glass with fragmented thoughts going here, there, and everywhere, then Amazonite may be the most amazing gemstone for weaving together all those frayed emotional threads.
